At first glance, horror and romance are so different that the idea of combining them in one story might seem weird. While the genres have obvious differences, they also have similarities. Both horror and romance depend on intense emotions. One unlocks people’s fears and the other  their desires. Romantic horror or horror romance blurs the line between genres, creating a dark fantasy in which love blossoms in a dangerous setting.

The stories in my Pandemonium universe are erotic romances with horror elements. At times they cross from paranormal romance to horror due to some graphic violence and scenes that have disgusting elements found more often in horror than in romance. Although some stories include relatively violent sexual scenes with villains, the sex scenes between the heroes and heroines are true to the romance genre and don’t include brutality. Their love for each other is a safe haven in the often frightening world they’re living in. That’s not to say that villains don’t try to destroy that haven. In Trinity and Jeff the most difficult scene to write was when the villain appeared as Trinity and seduced Jeff in an attempt to kill him in the most intimate way possible. For me, this was a gray area because Trinity’s image was used in an erotic horror scene, something that I use sparingly when blending these two genres.

Combining horror and romance can be tricky, but as a fan of both genres, I find writing a story with elements of both rewarding.

What are your views on romantic horror? For you is there a line that shouldn’t be crossed regarding horror and erotica?

Excerpt:

Staring into his intense brown eyes, Trinity weakened. Why had he always been able to do this to her? Make her furious and then present a perfectly logical and usually loving reason for him intruding on her life.

“I won’t let it happen this time, Jeff. You’re always doing this. Sticking your big nose in where it doesn’t belong.”

“Don’t insult my nose.”

“You know what I mean. It’s like the time my friends and I went up to the lake for a midnight swim. It was supposed to be a girls’ night and you busted in.”

“Your friend Cheryl nearly drowned when the canoe tipped.”

“I know. You were right, and we appreciated your help, but that’s beside the point.”

“And what about the time you and your cousins went ice skating on the pond with that moron your cousin Amelia had a crush on.”

“Moron? Alexander was genius level.”

“Some genius. He ended up showing off and breaking his leg so I had to carry his ass to the main road. If I hadn’t been there, who would have carried him? You or Amelia?”

“We’d have done it. Just because you’re like a gorilla and can throw a six-foot man over your shoulder doesn’t mean Amelia and I couldn’t have handled the situation.”

“You’re welcome.”

“Listen, Jeff, I know you mean well and you’ve always been there for me. I love you like a brother, but you have to understand that –”

“Don’t.” Jeff held up his large hand and Trinity stared at it for a moment.
